Along with smoking and tobacco use, studies have now linked another habit to a higher prevalence of oral cancer: excessive alcohol consumption. New studies show that those who are “heavy” drinkers are more likely to experience oral cancer than those who are not. The probability jumps significantly if the person is not only a heavy drinker but a smoker, as well. Our North Hollywood dentist wants to help you prevent oral cancer and other dangerous oral problems by having regular visits and exams. Exams are the best, and sometimes only, way to prevent serious oral health issues.

Bad breath is a common and embarrassing problem for many people. There are several causes of bad breath; some are related to your general health, and some are more specific, involving the oral cavity, your teeth, and environmental factors. Our North Hollywood dentist can provide you with information on how to avoid bad breath, especially that caused by periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the clinical term for gum disease. Diseases of the gums, such as gingivitis, involve a great deal of bacteria which can give off an offensive odor. During a dental exam, many dentists can identify gum disease immediately by the characteristic smell that emanates from these bacteria.

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases in America, with over 21 million people currently diagnosed and many more who are unaware that they have the disease. Recent research has shown that, along with problems related to circulation, the heart, and vision, diabetes also contributes to poor oral health, especially gum disease. Our dentist can discuss diabetes and your overall oral health with you. The progression of gum disease, or gingivitis, can be hastened by a diabetic condition. People with diabetes have less ability to fight off infection and are more vulnerable to bacteria of all types. Since bacteria is the cause of gum disease, it stands to reason that those with diabetes cannot fight off oral bacteria as effectively as non-diabetics.

If you want a whiter smile, you're in luck. New advancements in dentistry have made it possible to get the whitest smile ever, and in a relatively short time. In order to choose the right whitening treatment, it's important to understand why your smile gets dull and what happens when you use a whitening product. Teeth originally have a white, shiny color that seems to sparkle in the mouth. The enamel, or outside covering of a tooth is naturally white and brilliant. Over time, foods and drinks such as coffee and tea, and cigarette smoke can lead to dental plaque and staining. Bacteria multiply due to dental plaque, creating acids which erode enamel and soon, stains are embedded deeply in the teeth and cannot be removed with routine brushing. This process repeats itself over and over until your teeth become substantially dull and yellow.

Stains are permanent marks on teeth caused by various foods or habits. Unfortunately, many “healthy” foods can permanently stain teeth and make them duller and darker. Some of the foods most often causing tooth stains are blueberries, coffee, soda, and tea. Most people are familiar with these, but curry, soy sauce, and other foods can also stain teeth. Surprisingly, the foods themselves are not usually the culprit; the acids in them, along with the fact that many of these foods are consumed at hot temperatures, weakens the tooth enamel, allowing stains to penetrate. Another culprit is tobacco. Tobacco leaves residue on teeth, whether it is smoked, chewed, or dipped. The highly corrosive chemicals contribute to wearing away of tooth enamel, causing stains to gradually build up.

Pregnancy is a time of dramatic change for most women. One thing many pregnant women overlook however, is their oral health. Although as many as 75% of pregnant women suffer from pregnancy gingivitis, only about half of all pregnant women seek help from a dental professional while they are pregnant. Many mistakenly believe that all dental work is risky during pregnancy. An estimated 500 different kinds of bacteria take up residence in the human body. While many of these bacteria are harmless or even beneficial, some are not. The bacteria known to cause tooth decay, for example, are anything but harmless. Bacteria attach to the enamel on teeth, where they feed off the sugars and starches in many foods. Acidic byproducts are formed as a result, and these acids damage the enamel, allowing cavities to develop. Brushing twice daily and flossing daily can help remove plaque, but there is one more important tool in the fight against the bacteria that cause cavities: fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that is found naturally in many water supplies and works in two ways to prevent cavities. First, it strengthens tooth enamel by remineralizing it, making it more resistant to the ravages of the bacteria's acids. Secondly, it interferes with the bacteria’s metabolic processes, and prevents the production of more acid.

If your teeth are sensitive to heat, cold, sweet and/or acidic foods, you may be wondering what causes this problem. Teeth become sensitive when the tooth dentin has become exposed. Tooth roots have a soft covering, unlike the hard enamel that covers the crown portion of teeth. This soft covering is called cementum. Once it’s damaged, the dentin of the root becomes exposed. When certain substances come in contact with this dentin, the result is sometimes severe tooth sensitivity.

Bad breath is sometimes caused by obvious factors such as eating certain foods. However, there are a number of hidden and non-obvious conditions that can lead to bad breath; poor oral hygiene and the insufficient removal of plaque from the teeth, chewing tobacco and/or smoking, dry mouth, and certain medical conditions, such as diabetes.
One of the main underlying reasons for bad breath is infection within the gums. If bad breath seems to be a chronic condition, your teeth and gums need to be evaluated by a dentist to check for the existence of periodontal disease. If periodontal disease does exist, there are a number of treatments that can clear up the bacteria, restore oral health, and alleviate bad breath problems permanently from the source.

Studies have been performed to determine what type of link there may be between gum disease and the incidence of strokes. Results show that individuals with gum disease are twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease. Bacteria within gum tissue can hit the bloodstream and contribute to the formation of clots in the arteries. These blood clots will restrict the flow of blood within the arteries by interfering with the amount of oxygen and nutrients that must flow for the heart to function properly. Inflammation of the gums can also increase the chance of plaque build up, causing an increase in artery swelling and restriction. Consequently, a stroke or heart attack tends to occur more frequently in individuals with an oral infection than in those without it.

Improper oral care can result in various forms of gum disease and potentially serious health conditions. Bacteria growth begins inside the mouth shortly after eating. If bacteria continues to grow without being removed, the formation of sticky plaque and tarter begins on the teeth. These harmful bacteria can seep into the gum line and create the potential for oral diseases such as gingivitis, oral thrush, and bad breath. If caught early, these defects can typically be treated with routine dental care and proper oral hygiene. When left untreated however, bacteria can cause harmful health issues. Recent dental studies have confirmed that bacterial growth can be ingested down the throat cavity and into the respiratory system. This bacterial ingestion can cause serious lung diseases and contribute to pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. The lung tissue absorbs the bacterial particles and growth is permitted causing serious complications.

Dry mouth, or xerostomia, is a condition that occurs when too little saliva is produced, leaving the mouth in a dry state. This malady can be caused by stress, certain medications and various diseases, such as AIDS. Having dry mouth can make it very difficult to eat, speak and swallow. Dry mouth can also contribute to problems with the teeth and gums, as saliva acts as a lubricant and helps wash away food particles and impurities. As such, with a lack of saliva in the mouth, there’s a greater likelihood of developing tooth decay and periodontal disease.
If you have dry mouth caused by the use of medication(s), your doctor may be able to adjust the dosages so that you will no longer have this side effect. Also, if a medical condition is causing your dry mouth, your doctor again will play a part in helping you get it under proper control so that it can either be completely eliminated or substantially reduced.

Osteoporosis causes a reduction in bone mass throughout the body, and although most people don’t realize it- this bone loss can also include the bones in the jaw. When bone mass in the jaw decreases substantially, it can no longer provide a stable anchor to support teeth and subsequent tooth loss occurs. Studies on postmenopausal women have also shown that the existence of periodontal bacteria in the mouth can increase the chances of oral bone loss, thus increasing the likelihood of losing teeth. If women are able to control periodontal disease, they can lessen the probability of experiencing tooth loss.

There are a few health checks you can keep your eye on to help you identify possible problems: 1) Gums that are swollen, red, or bleed easily, are generally exhibiting the tell-tale signs of the existence of periodontal disease- a major contributor to heart disease. Infection in the gums can travel through the bloodstream to other areas of the body, such as the heart. Periodontal disease may also be a sign of diabetes, because diabetics are generally more at risk for infections. If you have bleeding gums, you may want to make an appointment with your dentist to have it checked out.

The best way to prevent gum disease is to effectively remove plaque from the teeth. Optimally, if you could brush after every meal and snack, then you could keep plaque from building up on the teeth. But unfortunately brushing after every meal and snack isn't a realistic possibility for most of us... which is why dentists recommend the next best thing: brushing twice a day. When brushing your teeth, take two minutes to go over your entire mouth. Don't cut your time short, as teeth and gums benefit the most from two minute brushings twice daily.

Plaque on teeth that’s not completely removed can create problems inside the mouth. When plaque hardens, it becomes tartar…something that is not easily removed and will require the services of a dentist in order to be scraped away. When tartar forms under the gumline, it’ll eventually lead to inflammation of the gums, which is known as gingivitis. This is gum disease in its early stages. A professional cleaning at the dentist can resolve gingivitis, but if it’s not treated, it’ll develop into more serious periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth and bone loss.

Studies have shown that piercing the lip, tongue or cheek can cause gingival recession in the area of the piercing, which is unattractive and also a threat to dental health. Tooth decay and periodontal disease have a greater chance of occurring as a result of a piercing in the mouth.
Although oral piercings have become very popular, the reality is that with the amount of bacteria that exists in the mouth, piercings can greatly increase the incidence of infection- particularly if good oral hygiene is not maintained in the area of the piercing.

The increase of tobacco intake among kids and youngsters ages 10 to 17 has become undeniably problematic. Experts say that in reference to this, instances of oral cancer among kids in this age group appear to be mounting. “The major cause of addiction among children is cheap availability of tobacco products. Although the selling of tobacco products to minors is prohibited, the law isn’t observed stringently, and minors have easy access to these products”. Also, the ingestion of tobacco products such as, mawa, pan masala and gutkha is mainly observed among kids dwelling in slums. This utilization of tobacco, researchers have found, might lead to oral submucous fibrosis, a pre-cancerous lesion that can result in cancer. The common symptoms are; trouble fully opening the mouth and failure to endure hot or spicy food.

Researchers at Edinburgh University in Scotland have recently discovered that treating gum disease in diabetics can also minimize the complications associated with diabetes. Scientists aren't quite sure yet why solving a problem with the mouth will also solve problems with the rest of the body, but the theory is that the bacteria infecting the mouth cause chemical changes in the body that reduce the effectiveness of insulin, thereby raising blood sugar levels (Source: BBC News, May 12, 2010).

Periodontitis, in layman's terms, is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft tissues that support the teeth. As a result of chronic inflammation, people suffering from periodontitis experience progressive bone loss in the alveolar bone – the bone that contains the tooth sockets supporting the teeth. As a direct result of this bone loss, patients with periodontitis may eventually lose their teeth. Caused by a combination of microorganisms eating away at the tooth surface and an aggressive immune system response to these microorganisms, people with periodontitis might notice some of these symptoms:
- A constant metallic taste in the mouth - Loose teeth - Persistent bad breath - Recurrent gum swelling - Receding gums - Red or bleeding gums after brushing teeth, utilizing dental floss, or eating hard foods
