Importance of Dental Care for Children

Importance of Dental Care for ChildrenStatistics show that 25% of children ages 2 to 5 suffer from some form of tooth decay. A recent study of 65 children in this age range who were undergoing treatment for cavities in baby teeth also indicated that approximately 28% of them had a BMI (body mass index) that would point a finger at obesity.

These findings show that there may be a connection between obesity and tooth decay. The connection most likely lies in the poor nutritional eating habits of children. It’s vitally important for children to be instructed early on about proper nutrition and good dental care.

Healthy oral hygiene habits are crucial for everyone- children and adults. Infection in the gums from untreated cavities can create problems elsewhere in the body and may contribute to heart disease, diabetes and stroke. If children don’t learn about taking proper care of their teeth and gums while they’re still young, sloppy dental hygiene will most likely follow them into adulthood, creating circumstances where they can be plagued with dental problems and other health issues throughout their entire lifetime.

It must be stressed to children that brushing and flossing every day, along with following proper nutrition guidelines, are essential habits that will be of benefit to their oral hygiene and will also help keep their bodies healthy for a lifetime.
