Treating Bruxism

Treating BruxismBruxism, also known as teeth grinding, may be caused by stress. Those of us with aggressive or anxious personalities are known to habitually clench our teeth- often without even realizing it.  Stomach disorders and teeth that are not in proper alignment also may be substantial contributors to bruxism. Unfortunately, if you suffer from bruxism, you are sure to experience damage to your teeth over time.

You can exert quite a bit of pressure when your teeth are clenched. What results is; loose teeth, wear on teeth edges, breakage, sensitivity of the teeth, irritation inside the mouth, facial pain and headaches.

The good news is that bruxism can be minimized or even eliminated by addressing the root of the problem. If your bruxism is caused by dental issues such as misaligned teeth, dental devices such as braces can help bring teeth into proper alignment and put an end to the harmful grinding.

For those patients that grind their teeth at night without any awareness, a device called a nightguard can be made and worn during sleep to protect your teeth from the pressure exerted on them when you grind.
