Understanding Tooth Sensitivity

Understanding Tooth SensitivityIf your teeth are sensitive to heat, cold, sweet and/or acidic foods, you may be wondering what causes this problem. Teeth become sensitive when the tooth dentin has become exposed. Tooth roots have a soft covering, unlike the hard enamel that covers the crown portion of teeth. This soft covering is called cementum. Once it’s damaged, the dentin of the root becomes exposed. When certain substances come in contact with this dentin, the result is sometimes severe tooth sensitivity.

What causes dentin to be exposed? Sometimes brushing too vigorously or using abrasive toothpaste can wear down the enamel and expose dentin. Periodontal disease can also create dentin exposure due to receding gums. Anything that will cause the enamel of the tooth to wear, such as a diet high in citrus foods or sodas, can also cause the dentin of teeth to become exposed. Acid in the mouth, resulting from conditions such as bulimia and GERD, may also be responsible for eroding the enamel and allowing dentin to become exposed. And lastly, age can create dentin exposure from naturally receding gums.

Tooth sensitivity warrants a trip to our North Hollywood dentist to get proper treatment.
De-sensitizing toothpastes and special fluoride gels can be helpful, but sometimes only a dentist can determine the best course of treatment for tooth sensitivity. Our dentists in North Hollywood will know what to do to help ease your sensitive teeth. Call today, (818) 824-8228.
